About the Scrabble Dictionary Checker

Our dictionary checker validates words against the three most popular word-game dictionaries:

  • TWL (Tournament Word List) — The official dictionary for North American Scrabble tournaments, maintained by Hasbro. Contains approximately 187,000 words.
  • SOWPODS — The combined international Scrabble dictionary used in most countries outside North America. It merges the TWL and OSW dictionaries, containing over 267,000 words.
  • ENABLE — The dictionary used by Words With Friends, with its own unique set of accepted words and different letter point values.

Why Check Words?

In competitive Scrabble, playing an invalid word results in the loss of your turn and the removal of your tiles. Using a dictionary checker before your game helps you build confidence in your word choices. During practice sessions, checking words helps expand your vocabulary and learn new high-scoring options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our checker uses official word lists including the North American TWL (official Hasbro list), SOWPODS (international standard), and ENABLE (Words With Friends lexicon) to provide 100% accurate validation.
What happens if a word is invalid in Scrabble?
In standard tournament play, if you play an invalid word and your opponent challenges it, your turn is forfeited, and you must take your tiles back.
Why do some words work in Words with Friends but not Scrabble?
Words With Friends uses the ENABLE dictionary, which includes many slang, colloquial, and modern terms that are excluded from the traditional Scrabble dictionaries (TWL and SOWPODS).
